Past Perfect Simple se formează cu verbul auxiliar To Have la trecut (HAD ) + verbul de conjugat la past participle (forma a 3-a sau terminația ed pentru verbele regulate) Îți indică o acțiune trecută și terminată înaintea unei alte acțiuni trecute și terminate. Past Perfect Continuous se formează HAD+BEEN +VB(ING) - indică o acțiune în desfășurare înaintea unei alte acțiuni trecute, de obicei semnalate cu "by the time". Exemple: 1. I had already finished my homework when my friends arrived. 2. Mark had known the story when I wanted to tell it to him. 3. They had already spoken when I got there. 4. Father had already left when mother arrived at home. 5. Julia had already played in several movies when we met. Cu Past Perfect Continuous faci cam așa: Mother had been cooking lunch for 2 hours by the time/ when we got home.
Father had been playing the guitar for 10 minutes when the phone rang.
My sister had been reading for half an hour when her friend interrupted her.
